It's 1799 and the entire world is taking one last deep breath before diving, screaming, into the next century.
For now, transportation is still by horse or sail, but raw materials and finished products travel faster than ever before.
The once ruling class is finding that their place on top is not as steady as it might have once seemed.
Monsters of clockwork steel and steam chew up fortunes, hope and even lives while spitting out various goods.
The rule of law is arbitrary at best, entire families torn asunder at the word of a judge, based on nothing more than unsubstantial testimonies and bias.
Souls have never been so cheap.
Now, what kind of desperate are you? Come, come, no need to be shy. I'll find out eventually anyway.
The items in bold?
Don't worry, they aren't anything too dire.
- (Selfless) Someone else's life, health or happiness means more to you than your own soul, morality or reputation. Gain one resolve, and one insanity.
- (Greed) You've built an impressive reputation, amount of wealth, or situation of comfort. Keeping it depends on the favor of your patron. Lose one composure, but gain one move.
- (Revenge)Someone wronged you. Maybe they stole your identity and systematically ruined your life. Maybe they killed your dog. Maybe they just cheated you out of a promotion. Gain one resolve, but lose one style.
- (Forever) Effective immortality and occult knowledge? What's the downside? Oh. Yeah. Your patron doesn’t trust you, and you’re losing your grip. Lose one resolve, gain one insight, gain one DA point and gain one insanity.
- (Deal) You wanted something that could not be gained by ordinary means. To gain this effect or object, you made a deal. Keeping it has proven to be the greater challenge. Lose one composure, gain one insight.
- (Shield) You fucked up badly enough that your face and name have earned the hatred of an entire country, or an organization that has roughly that much clout and manpower, but less defined borders. People have been known to try to kill you on sight. Your patron ‘fixed’ this, but can remove his protection at any moment. Lose one resolve, gain one style, gain one DA point and gain one insanity.
While we're on the subject of what kind of person you are, here are some things I'd like to know:
If you want to tell me more about yourself, feel free to do so. I will judge, but you're in good company.
Mmmm? Oh yes, the items in bold.
Composure: The ability to stay cool under pressure. Makes NPCs more or less likely to trust. Default: 2
Move: Decision making and reaction speed. Higher numbers have priority in action rounds. Default: 2
Insight: Likelihood to discern truths beyond the surface. Default: 2
Style: The ability to deceive, conceal, cheat, etc. Default: 2
Insanity: A special condition that, if sufficiently explored, gains a DA point. A little breakage is to be expected in the situation. These are the more extreme fractures of the mind that are difficult have a functional life with.
Currencies
Resolve: How many times is in you to be drawn back from the brink. Start with two(2).
(D)ramatically (A)ppropriate Point: Declare result, can only be countered by another DA point. Difficult to come by. Start with one(1).
- Do you feel old?
- What do you do in the hours between your last meal of the day and getting something resembling sleep?
- There is a wretched soul in the gutter. Do you think they earned their fate?
- You made it. I'm letting you retire with your gains. Where to?
- Boldly stride down the boulevard, or skulk in the byways?
- There is something following you. What do you hope it isn't?
- Do you still hold out hope for 'true love'?
- Whatever passes for your 'family' has written to you to ask for help. What kind of help do they need and what will they get from you?
- The power to change the world is your's for exactly two minutes, and you don't have time to think about it. What do you do?
- Do you think of yourself as being a good person?
If you want to tell me more about yourself, feel free to do so. I will judge, but you're in good company.
